We travel to the Durban City Centre, to start the tour at Tourist Junction, for information about Gandhi’s train journey in Durban 1893. It boasts a bust of Gandhi. Close by, we visit the Old Court House Museum presenting fascinating replicas of Durban’s early settlements, and among its collections are photos, artifacts and documents that relate to Mahatma Gandhi.
We continue the tour to visit the Gandhi Settlement Centre in Inanda, where you will be given insight into Gandhi’s work in this area. We visit Gandhi’s home. Gandhi founded a small ashram at Phoenix in 1904 and began printing the Indian Opinion newspaper there. Only the ruins of the original buildings remain. The area is also known as Bhambayi(Bombay). We continue our tour to Pietermaritzburg, the Capital City of Kwa Zulu-Natal, to visit the Mahatma Gandhi Statue in the City Centre and Pietermaritzburg Station, where Gandhi was thrown off the train onto the platform for refusing to downgrade from a ‘Whites- Only’ first-class compartment.
